Meeting OSSB’s Needs: Introducing Joann Amaro
When OSSB needed a professional to work in their elementary department, PSI introduced Joann Amaro, whose diverse background and drive for personal growth made her an ideal fit. Joann’s passion for helping others, combined with PSI’s experience and support, has allowed her to thrive in her role and make a lasting impact on the OSSB community.

Joann’s Journey at OSSB
Joann’s path to OSSB was unexpected but rewarding. “I wasn’t really looking for a new opportunity,” she explained. “But when I heard about the position, I loved the idea of a challenge and the chance to work with children.” With certifications in medical assisting and phlebotomy, and experience as a business owner and Notary Public, Joann brought a wealth of skills and a desire to learn.
At OSSB, she set ambitious goals for herself, including learning braille—a challenge she embraced wholeheartedly. “Learning braille was a big goal for me, and I’m proud to have accomplished that,” she said.
Making an Impact in and Beyond the Classroom
Joann’s role as an institutional aide in the elementary department has allowed her to grow both personally and professionally. She also coaches cheer and wrestling and recently completed her first season with the OSSB marching band. “These kids are absolutely amazing and overcome so much on a daily basis,” Joann shared. “I still learn from my students every day.”
Joann credits PSI for their ongoing support throughout her journey. “PSI was there every step of the way. Any problems I had, I always knew they were there to help me in any way possible,” she said. She also praised PSI’s commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion. “PSI does an amazing job of celebrating diverse backgrounds and just overall being inclusive of their employees.”
Lessons Learned and Future Goals
Reflecting on her experience, Joann emphasized the importance of compassion and continuous learning. “Working at OSSB definitely emphasized the necessity and value of continuous learning and the importance of having compassion for everyone,” she explained. “But just being at OSSB and working with these amazing kids has been one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve ever had.”
Looking to the future, she’s considering earning her Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) certification to deepen her impact.
