Most people think of PSI as an IT staffing firm. And we are. But the skills that make us exceptional at placing technical talent (deep intake conversations, strategic evaluation, a consultative approach) are the same ones that drive how we recruit for creative, design, and operational roles.
We sat down with Patrice Johnson, a Talent Acquisition Specialist who focuses on creative and operational hiring, to talk about what it actually takes to find the right fit in these fields. It’s a different kind of search. And it requires a different kind of recruiter.

It Starts with Understanding the Brand
Before Patrice presents a single candidate, she does her homework — on the client.
“You have to understand their culture, their campaign strategy, their aesthetic. A creative professional who thrives at one company can completely miss the mark at another — not because of skill, but because of fit.”
Creative and fashion-forward organizations evaluate talent differently. Where technical roles have clear benchmarks — certifications, architecture experience, system performance — creative roles are more fluid. The evaluation shifts toward brand equity, trend awareness, collaboration style, and aesthetic consistency. Cultural fit and brand fluency can outweigh years of tenure.
That’s a harder hire to get right, and where a consultative approach makes all the difference.
Portfolios Matter More Than Resumes
In creative staffing, what someone has done matters far more than where they went to school or what their title was. Patrice evaluates portfolios through a specific lens: not just aesthetics, but outcomes.
“We want to see the impact of the work. How did this campaign perform? How did this design contribute to the brand? Candidates who can connect their creative output to business results stand out immediately.”
Patrice’s advice to candidates: show your thinking, not just the final product. Walk clients through how an idea evolved and why decisions were made. Make the outcomes visible with metrics, engagement lifts, and results that translate creative work into business success. And demonstrate adaptability. In fashion, retail, and marketing, timelines compress fast. The ability to pivot without losing quality is one of the most valued things a creative candidate can show.
Creative Staffing as Brand Stewardship
PSI doesn’t treat creative placements as transactional fills. We treat them as brand stewardship.
Every creative professional we place becomes a carrier of a client’s identity. They shape how a brand looks, sounds, and feels. Getting that wrong has ripple effects. Getting it right can elevate an entire team.
One placement Patrice is particularly proud of involved a creative professional moving into a retail marketing role that required both design skills and the ability to build immersive in-store experiences — not a traditional profile for the role. But because PSI had done the work to understand the client’s long-term brand strategy, not just the job description, they knew the fit was right. The team hit their launch goals. The placement stuck. That’s the outcome a good fit produces.
Most staffing firms treat creative hiring as an afterthought. PSI approaches it as a specialty.
We conduct deep intake conversations to understand creative direction before we ever open a search. We evaluate portfolios using strategic criteria, vetting for cross-functional communication, collaboration style, and brand fluency, not just technical output. And we align talent to your long-term brand strategy, not just the open role in front of you today.
